Sylvia Plath Fans Take It To The Extreme

Sheila posted this on my Facebook wall today. It’s a line from Sylvia Plath’s novel, The Bell Jar:

I’ve thought about tattooing “Cauldron of morning” (the last line of Ariel) around my wrist, but ultimately I just don’t think I’m a tattoo kind of girl. Maybe I’ll have a secret tattoo one day – the Enron E with a Sylvia Plath phrase inside of it. That way I only have to get one!

  1. I do like that “I am I am I am” line.

  2. Cara Ellison says:

Yes, there’s something very eloquent about it when it’s tattooed to your arm. Like, I EXIST. The fact I have this on my arm means I EXIST.

I was thinking of your tattoo. You never regretted it, you said. Maybe I’ll get a Sylvia tattoo somewhere. It’s a fun idea. There are so many good lines that I would love to carry around with me all day.

i rise with my red hair and
    i eat men like air

    my blacks
    crackle and drag

This one actually is a little too dark to wear permanently, I think.

    But perhaps:

    The woman is perfected

Those who know Plath might be alarmed, but for everyone else, it would just look quite arrogant.

    This is Number Three

I think I could actually get away with that one.

Does not my heat astound you?

    I like that.

  3. Just stumbled on this…I was going to get a similar tattoo, but based off of her poem “Suicide Off Egg Rock” – his blood beats the old tattoo I am, I am, I am. I think its a lovely sentiment!

  4. Found this by chance, just started reading the bell jar and love it do far, great tattoo

  5. Cara Ellison says:

I’d love to hear your impressions after you read Bell Jar. It’s a dark story, but worth it.

  6. Wow, i just had to say wow.
this is absolutely amazing, i’ve never seen anything like it.
    stunning. beautiful.

*one of my favourite plath quotes.
